Rabid fox bites N.J. resident walking dog, officials say

A rabid fox bit someone walking a dog last week in Camden County after the animal attacked the dog, officials said Friday.
A Gloucester Township resident and a family member were walking their dog in Gloucester Township last Friday when a fox attacked their dog, authorities said.
While trying to separate the fox and the dog, the fox bit the family member, according to officials.
Gloucester Township’s animal control officer retrieved the fox and sent it to the state’s Public Health & Environmental Lab in Trenton for rabies testing, officials said.
The Camden County Health Department was notified today that the fox was confirmed to have rabies, authorities said.
The person that was bitten by the fox has already started receiving post-exposure prophylaxis and the dog was given a booster shot and will be under quarantine and observation for four months, officials said.
As one of the largest areas in Camden County, Gloucester Township has had several confirmed cases of rabies in 2024 including a number of skunks, raccoons and other animals.
